Aarti, also spelled arathi, aarthi, is a Hindu religious ritual of worship, which forms an integral part of puja. It involves offering light from wicks soaked in ghee or camphor to one or more deities. Aartis are accompanied by songs that extol the deity while the lamps are being presented.

Aarti is believed to have originated from the Vedic practice of fire rituals (homa). In the elaborate aarti ritual, each element symbolizes different facets:

• The flower represents solidity (earth)
• Water and the accompanying handkerchief correspond to liquidity (water)
• The lamp or candle symbolizes heat (fire)
• The peacock fan signifies the quality of air (movement)
• The yak-tail fan represents the subtle form of ether (space)
• Incense is emblematic of a purified state of mind,
• One's "intelligence" is presented through adhering to the rules of timing and order of offerings.

Through the aarti ceremony, devotees symbolically offer their entire existence and all aspects of material creation to the Lord.
